Alumni Profile: Ro Johnson stays connected with HSU as an advisory board member

Ro Johnson
Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Ro Johnson. I graduated from Henderson State University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management, and again in 2022 with a Master of Science in Sports Administration. I am originally from the Mississippi Delta, but I adopted Hot Springs as my second home. Currently, I serve as a teacher and coach at my alma mater.
How did your education and experiences at Henderson prepare you for your career path?
The courses, experiences, and connections I made at Henderson prepared me for my career. The professors dedicated their time and energy to helping me grow both academically and personally. Their support and commitment motivated me to become my best self. Also, as a student-athlete, the skills I learned are valuable to my career in coaching.
What motivates you to serve on the HSU Alumni Advisory Board?
Being able to serve on the board to help strengthen that bridge between alumni and students, and staying connected!
What were some of your favorite memories from your time at Henderson?
Earning my degrees, meeting people, enjoying the college atmosphere, being part of a conference championship in football, and becoming a member of Omega Psi Phi!
Were there any specific courses or professors that had a significant impact on you?
Dr. Wempe for sure. Great guy and professor.! He really connected with all his students!
What message would you like to send to future Henderson students?
Get out and get involved; meet people! Be disciplined, take care of your responsibilities, and enjoy yourself!
If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Super speed! It’s so many abilities in just one power.
What is your favorite hobby or activity to unwind after a busy day at work?
Honestly, I enjoy music -- all types. Finding good music to calm the mind!
What is the most interesting place you’ve ever visited and why?
Toronto, Canada. Great people with good vibes and energy!
If you could choose any historical figure to have dinner with, who would it be, and why?
Harriet Tubman. I think it would be great to understand how she found the strength to keep going when the odds were against her.
If you could listen to only one music genre for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Probably some good blues music.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and how has it influenced your life or career?
Every loss is a lesson. Learn from any setbacks, and keep pushing.
If you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring three things, what would they be?
Water, fishing pole, and machete. I’ll survive with that!
