The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS), formerly Bachelor of Integrated Studies, is a university-wide, academically flexible degree program. It allows students to pursue study in thematic areas of interest and career-focused disciplines. Students integrate coursework from multiple disciplines in preparation for academic and professional goals, leading to advancement in graduate study or the professional world. Students will identify educational and career goals and, in consultation with a faculty advisor, develop a customized plan of study. Students work closely with their academic advisor throughout their tenure in the BIS program.
Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies students select one from two possible paths to completion:
- Interdisciplinary Studies – General
- Students complete courses from a minimum of two academic disciplines to complete their program of study.
- Interdisciplinary Studies – Two Minors
- Students complete the requirements for two minors to complete their program of study.
All students, regardless of chosen path, must complete the required coursework for the BIS degree:
ISD 3003 Introduction to Interdisciplinary Studies is taken at the beginning of the plan of study to assist students in developing a statement of purpose and connecting their previous coursework and/or future coursework to their academic and career goals.
ISD 4033 Senior Seminar in Interdisciplinary Studies is the online capstone course for the BIS degree. Taken at the end of the plan of study, students will complete a capstone project, complete an e-portfolio, and present a public defense.
Critical Thinking/Technology Component:
Students in the BIS program are required to earn six (6) credits of coursework in critical thinking or technology. Students will work with their faculty advisor on selecting these courses.
In developing the plan of study, students are reminded that at least 42 hours must be taken at the junior and/or senior level. A maximum of seven hours of “D” will be accepted in the Liberal Arts Core and elective area, but a grade of “C” or better is required in all other areas. All bachelor’s degrees must have completed with a passing grade a minimum of 120 credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of not less than 2.00.
