RISE Program

Henderson State University’s core value of success is founded on our longstanding commitment to helping students understand the dimensions of what successful university-level education requires. The Reddie Intervention for Success in Education (R.I.S.E. Program) underscores our commitment and reflects the commitment we expect students to make toward their education in return. Students are admitted under the R.I.S.E. program to Henderson State University due to ACT scores (or equivalent) being below the minimum for unconditional admission.

Placement into the RISE Program

  • 20 or above ACT is Unconditionally Admitted
  • 19 ACT with 3.25 or higher High School GPA is Unconditionally Admitted
  • 19 ACT with 3.24 or lower High School GPA is Conditionally Admitted (RISE)
  • 18 or below ACT is Conditionally Admitted (RISE)
  • Students who otherwise would be admitted into the R.I.S.E. program based on ACT and high school GPA, may test out of the program and be unconditionally admitted if scoring an average of 246 on the Accuplacer exams, and only requiring one remedial course.

Note: New-Freshman and transfers required to complete the R.I.S.E. program are eligible to begin coursework during fall semesters only. Admission into R.I.S.E. is not currently available during spring semesters.

R.I.S.E. Program Requirements

  • R.I.S.E. Program Requirements 2021-2022

    • R.I.S.E students may enroll in a maximum of 13 hours during the fall term and 15 hours during the spring term. The assigned professional advisor will select and register the student for classes. A 2.0 cumulative GPA or better must be earned by the end of the academic year.
    • R.I.S.E. students may not change their schedule (add or drop courses) without written permission from their professional advisor.
    • R.I.S.E. students must complete all required remedial courses (elementary algebra, Review Math 0xx2, academic reading and basic English) with a grade of “C” or better and earn a total of 10 credit-bearing hours in order to enroll the following academic year. Students will only be able to extend their R.I.S.E status into the summer if they earn a cumulative 2.0 GPA or better by the end of spring semester.
    • R.I.S.E. students may be prohibited from returning for the spring term if their behavior at Henderson reflects an overall prevailing pattern of poor grades, class absences and/or insufficient participation in the RISE program during the fall term.
    • R.I.S.E. students that do not enroll for the spring term will receive a suspension notification to their HSU email in January.
    • R.I.S.E. students must enroll in course GEN1112, University College, for the spring term if their cumulative GPA at the end of fall semester is 2.00 or below. Completion of this course is required in order to enroll in the following academic year
    • R.I.S.E. students are required to attend 1-hour weekly tutor sessions and provide written proof to their professional advisor each week. My professional advisor may require the R.I.S.E. student to attend tutoring for any additional course in which they are not maintaining a “C” (or 2.00 cumulative GPA).
    • R.I.S.E. students are required to attend a minimum of five R.I.S.E workshops each semester.
    • R.I.S.E. students are required to meet with their professional advisor when requested. RISE communications will be directed to the student’s HSU email and on Canvas which they are obligated to check daily.
    • R.I.S.E. students will be monitored for class attendance, program requirements and grades throughout each semester.
    • R.I.S.E. students who choose to be employed, or join campus organizations, must understand such time commitments do not relieve them from their obligations under this contract. If they do not perform well academically, their professional advisor may request them to resign from time-consuming campus activities/organizations.
    • R.I.S.E. students with a Math ACT score below 16, and with a major program requiring College Algebra, will be required to complete MTH 0242, College Algebra Review (with a “C” or better) as a co-requisite with MTH 1243, College Algebra. MTH 0242 and MTH 1243 will be completed after passing MTH 0003, Elementary Algebra (with a “C” or better).
    • In the event that a student does not pass MTH 0242 with a "C", but does pass MTH 1243 at a level required by the major program, then the student will not be required to repeat MTH 0242. However, if at a later time the same student changes to a different program of study requiring a higher grade in MTH 1243, then the student will be required to retake college algebra along with MTH 0242.
    • R.I.S.E. students who do not successfully complete the program will be suspended from Henderson State University. To return, the student must

1.) Earn a 2.0 cumulative GPA or better (for at least 6 degree-bearing hours - not including remedial classes) from another institution.

2.) Pass all required remedial classes prior to their return to Henderson.

3.) Have completed a minimum of 12 degree-bearing hours since their first semester at HSU (these credits do not include remedial classes).
